A three-sided figure is a triangle, a four-sided, a quadrilateral, a five-sided figure, a pentagon. From there on up it’s something-gon (hexagon, heptagon, etc.). So why isn’t a four-sided figure called “quadrigon”? There’s “trigon” in “trigonometry”, so why isn’t a three-sided figure called a “trigon”.

Equilateral triangles have three sides that are equal (since lateral refers to the sides).
What else do equilateral triangles have that are equal? (Try “angles”)
