I’ve always suspected even really good cartoonists have bad days, when only they see the humor or the irony in something. Today (or several weeks/months ago, when it was drawn) is one of this cartoonist’s bad days. I don’t get it either.

i think Barb is right; it’s a simple play on the player’s number being 911

He’s hurt so often, they call him 911.

the 911 is to remind everyone who to call every time he goes down. If thats often you’d think the ambulance would be waiting at every game.

Hence his team number.

It’s a little sad how there can’t seem to be any jokes about the emergency phone number anymore. Since 2001 you can’t say the number without most people calling to mind only the tragedy of that day. Before then, there were all kinds of jokes about 911…
