It’s like the British and French pledging to defend Poland from Hitler. There was simply no way they could send aid to a distant nation in time. Likewise Ukraine is relatively inaccessible as Turkey controls access to the Black Sea and Ukraine is landlocked, not to mention Russia has nukes.
Orange Traitor Weasel would ask his BFF Vlad if he could put one of his towers in Kiev. That would make everything OK. Or he’d blame Hunter Biden for wrecking Ukraine and only his strong guy idol could “clean up the nasty mess”.
Putin is pushing for a land grab while Covid continues to wreck havoc and America just closed the book on Bush’s 20+ year Middle East / Afghan fiasco. It’s still too early to determine how well the Biden administration will handle this growing crisis. A big bonus Vlad got out of 45 (also his IQ) is a military super power so politically in conflict with itself that half congress would OK his invasion just to “own the libs”.
Just what could any president in this situation do? Economic sanctions are just about all that’s available short of military action. And that would be a huge mistake.
He’s already proved he’s not a Putin puppet. Besides sanctions, we can send troops back to some of the old military bases that were great to be stationed at. As a military (veteran) liberal, I think we were always better off with a few more active duty and a few less reserve duty.
The irony is that the “Ukraine” was more russian than european in the distant past. Trouble is a lot of Ukraines hold that nasty; Holodomor, also known as the Terror-Famine and sometimes referred to as the Great Famine directly caused by Stalin against Russia. Funny that.
I hope all this war footing by Putin is just for effect and a scare tactic. Except for bringing about a return to the good ole USSR days that Vlad is reported to desire, there’s little reason to reincorporate the Ukraine. With climate change, the Ukraine as breadbasket for Russia might be surpassed by Siberia. Plus, a retake of the Ukraine would put the other onetime USSR republics even more anxious to make use of their NATO connectedness. And, a following war will be expensive, and Russia isn’t well off enough for that level of war, especially with the EU and Biden sanctions imposed on Russia.
The entire world sees Que Mala Eres Biden as weak, feckless and incompetent. Both Putin and Xi know that there will be not better opportunity for acts of aggression. As to what the USA and our allies should do? How about this.
First off Putin will not risk a nuclear exchange so that’s off the board and any action would be conventional. What we should do is immediately start sending MANPAD, Stingers and tons of easily trained conventional weapons, equipment, vehicles and the troops to train them to western Ukrainian bases. Poland is a best friend who hates Russia so there would be little problem in building up forces in their eastern airports of Lublin and Rzesow. Station airwings of F15s, F16s, A10s, Apaches etc with supporting aircraft and equipment. Coordinate with Ukraine in preparing the western airports of Lviv and Uzhhorod to receive aircraft and equipment from Poland. Establish air superiority over Ukraine. Not a damn thing Putin could do in the face of that kind of build up especially if you threw allied forces into the effort.
FYI Soviet/Russian military equipment has NEVER stood up to the USA, they’ve lost in every encounter. Another interesting fact is that the F-15 has a 100% success rate in combat, over 100 kills with no losses mostly against Soviet aircraft. You put that much military force into the area and Putin wouldn’t do a damn thing as he knows that he’d suffer massive losses for no return and would take a huge ego hit on the world stage.
Sad thing is, Biden and his Marxist handlers will never do such a thing. I’d really like to be wrong here, but no. President Trump would probably very well do something like this. He’s a poker player and a hard hitting businessman. Good chances he’d roll the dice in this regard, he certainly did it against Putin’s mercs in Syria and elsewhere.

There are no good options that I can see.

We’re going to reenact the Crimean War, with the US playing the part of the British Empire, and Ukraine playing the part of Turkey.

Biden is a word-warrior. He’s good at it too. But I don’t know how well this is going to come out.

Trump would (did) offer Ukraine help if they created dirt on his opponent.

What is so different with Russia going into the Ukraine and our going into Iraq? Both are taking something that they want and does not belong to them.

Putin wants to keep Ukraine out of NATO. I wonder if Biden will agree to not support Ukraine as a NATO member?
