My older brother would dress up in bicycle pants, knee socks, wingtips, a super tight, ugly button up shirt with a big bow tie, and on his head a dirty, two foot tall drum major hat, with a wire that extended out the front that had a real dead possum carcass attached to it, and glasses that had weird eyes drawn on the lenses. He did the same outfit every year. The second time he did it, a group of kids stayed out by the street while one of their friends went to check him out. One of the kids yelled from the street, “See if he’s got that dead possum on his head. I’m not coming over there if he’s got that dead possum.” When my brother would hand out the candy, he would bend way over so the dead possum was right in their face.
