My one old dog would bury rawhide strips. She’d come in at some point with this combo moldy/dirty/swollen piece she eventually dug up. The fun part was trying to get it away from her.

Ah HA, so there is a head dog running things. Okay then.
My dogs never buried things but certainly loved to dig holes that yielded nothing.
