    “Zounds” is a contraction of “God’s wounds,” a popular oath in medieval times when proifanity was religion-based. “Gadzooks,” another popular oath, is a contraction of “God’s hooks,” referring to the nails of the Crucifixion. My Irish grandfather used to say, “Steeth” when angry, a contraction of “God’s teeth.” I’ll leave you to figure out what “Sblood” was.
