What makes you think he “needed” it? God had an infinite number of ways he could have created Eve. The rib just happens to be the one he went with. He seems to be rather fond of simple and eloquent solutions.

Though males have no missing ribs. A certain myth that is still spread around. Since Lilith had been created independently of Adam, to not make that mistake again Jehovah chose to construct Eve from him so she will feel the need to be subservient to him. Doesn’t always work.
