Kids these days! Y’know, in MY day we used ammonium dichromate for our toy volcanoes! Sparks shooting out, green ash littering the landscape, dire warnings about the hexavalent chromium in the pretty orange granules. Real fun for real kids, that was!
Actually there was a practical joke in Central Oregon in the very early 20th Century. In the desert, near Derrick Cave, there is a small volcanic vent in the terrain. It’s only about 30 feet high and maybe 100 feet across, but it does have a depression inside. One time, knowing that some ranchers would soon be driving by, a few pranksters put a huge heap of oily cloths in the depression and lighted them off. The ranchers, driving by on the dirt road passing it, saw the smoke and couldn’t turn around fast enough! Racing pell-mell for “safety”!
The smoke was also seen from a fire tower on the East side of China Hat, a good 30 miles away.
I know, when you’re out in the middle of nowhere, you get your yucks as you can.

This may not end so well – a big wall of carbon dioxide can kill you. It happened some years ago with a volcano in Africa. Cameroon, I believe.
