Have you ever noticed that in a stage play, and even some movies and TV shows, when four people are sitting around a table, they are all more or less facing the audience? They sit in a sort of trapezoid pattern with the outside characters somewhat at right angles to the audience and the middle people facing the audience. They aren’t breaking the fourth wall, but the director is well aware of that wall and positioned them to have the same effect. You can often identify a movie that’s been adapted from a play by that sort of thing.
