If Mr. McCain is not a war hero, then neither is any other US Military man or woman who survived incarceration in conflict this nation has ever fought. McCain was offered an early out during negotiations with Vietnam, and refused to accept it. The only thing those held in prison of war facilities could do was support each other and refuse to be broken. There is a quote that goes, “A hero is a person who, when placed under extraordinarily bad circumstances, excels.”Mr. Trump has exceled at little other than self promotion, self aggrandizement, and wealth accumulation. There is little, or nothing, heroic in those accomplishments.Respectfully,C.
I think Trump’s comments on McCain are despicable. Those who served in Vier Nam did their duty to protect this country. They didn’t choose to get captured. Perhaps they were drafted but they still served honorably. Others like Trump used deferments to skip the whole thing just as many ran to Canada. They were definitely the opposite of “hero”.
McCain wasn’t a great pilot, but he didn’t refuse to fly missions of risk, ditching his aircraft that had nothing wrong with it in one case, and falsely claiming hydraulic failure on another mission and turning back, or bail out, leaving his crewmen to die, like GHW Bush did in WW II. These acts are “sanitized” but described in “George Bush, His WW II Years”, an authorized biography.
John also didn’t desert from the Texas Air National Guard. (“W” was also reportedly a terrible pilot, and a drunk.)
I don’t like McCain’s policial exploits, but respect what he went through, even when he gave false “confession” under the most extreme duress as a POW, he did his duty to the best of his ability.
While I didn’t vote for Sen. McCain in 2008 I do respect him. Having Trump speak out against his service is an absolute disgrace. I can’t imagine any rational person ever consider voting for this buffoon.
Trump said he didn’t like his heroes “captured”. Someone should send him a copy of UNBROKEN, where a man who had GUTS outlasted the Japanese!Maybe someone should remind him, or give him a remedial history lesson, about Nathan Hale.
