Richard's Poor Almanac Spring Sky Watch by Richard Thompson The grand piano Safe The anvil The lawn dart Oh, great. ETA Carinae Terra firma Recent findings indicate that a nearby star, Eta Carinae, could go supernova, even hyper-nova, at any time. Makes this whole stargazing thing kind of an unnerving hobby. I'd say. Eta C. is only 7,500 light years away; as astronomical measurements go that's about as close as Dennis the Menace lives to Mr. Wilson! Eta C. is sitting right next door, bloating up & spitting gamma rays & and who knows what all, so close you can hear it. And none of those constellations looks too reassuring, either. In other good news, rumor has it that megalomaniac Kim Jong-Il has built a Death Star out of tin foil & a bug zapper. Our advice is, skip the stargazing, keep your head down & wear a hat. There's gamma rays out there.
Since Eta C. is 7,500 LY distance, it means anything we’re seeing today actually happened around 5,500 BC.
