    Actually cicadas do NOT descend on DC. They are already there. They just come out of hibernation every 7 years or so, then back into the ground.

    Also did not mention that they shed their shells all over the place and you can find them stuck to patio umbrellas, window screens, etc. Really creepy.

    My grandmother used to collect those shells, paint them different colors, and put on fake diamonds for their eyes. I like to find sluggish cicadas (easy to do if the weather cools off suddenly). I pick them up and put them on my shirt. They will eventually crawl up to my shoulder and I can put them back on trees.
