richard's poor almanac - by richard thompson more unwanted cicade facts in a few weeks cicadas will descend on the d.c. area by the trillion! did you know that they have lots of legs (6) and tiny, staring red eyes? is that creepy or what? and did you know that cicadas are naturally drawn to people? in fact they love nothing more than land-ing on a person & walking all over him or her with all 6 of their legs! man: yee get off and not only can they sense fear, they can detect even the slightest twinge of insectophobia from 5 miles away! then quick as a flash they move in for the dreaded "cicada dogpile." man: yeew ew ick ugh interestingly, the cicada's only natural enemy is - the northern snakehead! so it might be a good idea to keep your yard stocked with a dozen or so of these useful fish, just for peace of mind. man: kill!

Also did not mention that they shed their shells all over the place and you can find them stuck to patio umbrellas, window screens, etc. Really creepy.

My grandmother used to collect those shells, paint them different colors, and put on fake diamonds for their eyes. I like to find sluggish cicadas (easy to do if the weather cools off suddenly). I pick them up and put them on my shirt. They will eventually crawl up to my shoulder and I can put them back on trees.
