richard's poor almanac your fall foliage guide by richard thompson mother nature & her darn magic brush are at it again. sale at hechts venal beech - nature's way of reminding us that fall is really just the gateway to the holiday shopping season. pig: whoo! redskin maple - its delicate leaves of burgundy & gold attract noisy beer-swilling fans & cross-dressing pigs. man: my eyes! extreme birch - turns a blinding shade of radio-active yellow that should not be viewed directly. man: sorry, lady. karen hughes - oops! karen hughes is not a tree, though she is tallish & sometimes wears red. man: ah! baggy oak - fills up with windblown plastic bags all summer, then drops its leaves neatly bagged. man: alas. deaths head maple - turns a glum, corpsey-purple. best avoided by those prone to seasonal depression.
I am trying to remember when and where I last saw a Hecht’s department store. Maybe western NY state? Does it still exist?
