Stationed in ‘Rocket Alley’ (Bien Hoa), I must have made close to a hundred bunker runs. Charlie favored 109mm and 122mm rockets, poorly aimed, and not all that accurate when well-aimed. Tower guards would raise the alert when they saw them, and mortars, being fired (both being rather short-ranged), but I could hear mortars go up in my sleep and be in the bunker before the first one hit. Thing is, how much more terrifying would a nearly-one-ton payload with precision targeting be than a few pounds of spray and pray?
