That expression is most frequently used, but the actual original was “vous parlez français comme un Basque espagnol”. It means “you speak French like a Basque speaks Spanish”. The Basques speak a different language but live in very close proximity to areas of Spain, so their Spanish is likely heavily accented.
Quebecois French is more than slightly different than Parisian French! The accent for one thing, and the local expressions (on either side of the pond) make for very different dialects.
In grade 9, we once had an in-class assignment, to listen to a piece of Spanish guitar music with our heads down on our desks and then write what we felt afterwards. I wrote and entire story about love gone wrong, culminating in a very sad scene on a beach. It was all quite moving, to my 13 year old mind. Teacher’s comment? « Too much imagination »!! (Major eye roll, to this day)
