   The concept of “float” was relatively insignificant in business until the Jimmy Carter era, when short-term interest rates exceeded 18%. In economics, float is duplicate money present in the banking system during the time between a deposit being made in the recipient’s account and the money being deducted from the sender’s account. It can be used as investable asset, but makes up the smallest part of the money supply. If you had a million dollars you could earn $180,000 in a year at 18% if you could keep the money on your books. If the pointy-headed boss could keep an extra $1,000,000 in the bank, even for one day the additional earnings could be significant ($493/day) . But that would take a lot of stamps. Today, not so much, but the mechanisms put in place back then are still working to save money for businesses, but with the current lower interest rates it is not as productive.
