How funny – the strip for yesterday is the one I was seeking, but since I’d remembered it wrong, it was no help to the point I’d wanted to illustrate about 1980s immigration policies. With a sigh, I moved forward to this strip, simply to finish re-reading the series even though the hours (yes, hours) spent huntgin it were in vain. Lo and behold, a different installment that backs my point perfectly. Lovely.

Can’t believe it – All these years I’ve remembered this strip BACKWARD. See, the U.S. government at the time was very welcoming to Nicaraguans – who were fleeing an oppressor we opposed – but rejected Salvadorans because they were fleeing an oppressor we supported. Over the decades, I’d gotten to where I remembered the cartoon as depicting Salvadorans who had to pretend to be Nicaraguan. It blows my mind to think that a strip I remembered so vividly, I remembered so inaccurately!

Yes! This is the start of the series I was looking for half the night!
