It sounds like Cassel’s Book of Knowledge. Dad bought me a set when I was about 8 in 1948. It was an old edition. I remember chuckling at a monochrome photo of “a modern motor car”. The last volume, number 8 gave course outlines.
As kids we asked for zazoos at a serious music shop. We were told snootily “Downstairs in Novelties”.
