People’s self-centeredness didn’t tie George down; his compassion and selflessness did. As much as he griped, he loved the people of his town, and that love and self-sacrifice blessed not only the town, but George himself. He may have surrendered one dream, but while he fixated on that loss, he had gained another dream he hadn’t imagined, and only at the end does he see its worth. Self-serving choices tend to lead to temporary, immediate gratification, with lifelong problems and dissatisfaction—a truth that this generation sadly tends to reject.

We use a lot of Latin roots, prefixes, and suffixes in English, especially in medical terminology and scientific classifications, so it could be useful to someone like Caufield. I can even imagine him reading primary sources from the first century in Latin just for fun—because he can!
