The version in Matthew may be, pardon the pun, cheekier. Matthew specifically describes first the right cheek, then offer the left. Romans were strange for two things, the origin of right-handed bias and having an etiquette on how to slap people. If a right hander hits you on the right cheek, that implies he used the back of his hand, which is only used for inferiors. By offering the left cheek, you are calling him out as if to say, “If you’re going hit me, hit me like an equal.”
