I lived in Rio Rancho (suburb of Albuquerque ) for 5 years, and the weather there is much cooler than Phoenix. It sits at a higher altitude so it cools off most summer nights. It rarely gets into the triple digits. Also in the summer monsoon, afternoon showers are fairly common which also cools it off in the afternoon. In the Winter you will often get snow but it usually melts in a few days to a week. The crime issue is generally overstated but of course there is crime just like everywhere else. To me the big problem is water as New Mexico is in a drought just like the rest of the West. I really enjoyed my time there.
