Retired. Lives in SW Scotland hoping for Scotland to get its independence back and to join the European Union . . . unlikely in my lifetime, I expect.

For boys it used to be wanting to be an engine driver, but I think that faded away as the steam engine itself faded from the scene.

I don’t understand the significance of the shape of the shadow, but to someone of my age it is part of the ‘utility mark’ on things during WW2 here in UK – CC41 – https://tinyurl.com/2hzw2274

Here in UK the old apparatus at the telephone exchanges which did all the automatic dialling and connecting for many years is now costing too much to maintain and repair. So we are are being switched to a system which does away with all that, and your call goes out via your broadband connection. We are on it already, it worked OK, but it is a retrograde step in that of the BB fails or there is a power cut the telephone quits too. We have a mobile phone, but if there is a power cut will the mobile systems fail as well ?

If you have a ‘fibre to the cabinet’ (FTTC) connection the bit between your house and the cabinet in the street is still the old (and getting older) copper wires. UK is slowly getting round to ‘Fibre to the Premises’ (FTTP) but it will, take a long time to complete the whole country and rural areas will wait longest of all.

I got told at the audiology dept at our local hospital that my hearing loss showed evidence of being started by loud noises when young. This fitted nicely with the London Blitz of 1940. Not so much the bombs, but our anti aircraft guns.
