    Here’s what I think it means:

    The person asking for “sensible rhetoric” considers his own rhetoric to be sensible, no matter how extreme his ideas may be. Asking for “sensible rhetoric” means asking for people to agree. Anyone who disagrees is considered to be “extreme”.

    So, using “extreme rhetoric” that agrees with him is the only way to get him to listen.

    DC Comics did the same thing. They had so many different earths, it just got too complicated, so they combined them. But the possibilities for the writers, to have a world where things are a little different, was too tempting.
