    Even if it was Atlantis, folks would still find a way to de-Africanize the news: When Europeans first ‘discovered’ the Benin bronzes (incredible metalwork of 12th century West Africa) in the 19th century a German anthropologist concluded that they were the work of ancient Greeks from the lost city of Atlantis, because he refused to believe that Africans could do such impressive metalwork without learning it from Europeans.
