A really great XMAS present (Festivus Present) would be for Ann to start it up again…a clue that it isn’t going to happen is the reference to Tom Toles work…

Anybody know if Cannon was ever in the Army? Because as a retired First Sergeant, a surprisingly high percentage of these take me back to early mornings with a cup of yesterday’s coffee trying to get some dumbass to explain why he tried to pick up a whore while driving back from a Tank Wash stand?

The only learning necessary is to remember General Matthew Ridgeway who preached “do not get involved in a land war in Asia.” Fairly simple, fairly direct, and you don’t get anymore land war in Asia than Afghanistan.

I used to be a Catholic and I might tend to agree with StephenRice except that it’s more relevant to the the tendency to make life altering decisions based on incomprehensible judgements rendered or dictated by pre-literate, nomadic sheepherders as recorded and selected by a committee of old Semitic and Greek scholars and clerks and clergy in the 2nd-3rd Centuries CE. The Sermon on the Mount is pretty direct and straight, yet the Catholic Church as well as most other Christian religions ignore most of it. Jesus said nothing about abortion, or homosexuality or marriage. The sacrament of Marriage is based on Jesus’ turning water into wine, which he did because his mother told him to fix the problem and rejected his excuse that as Messiah he had other things to do of more importance.

That said, Catholic hospitals, schools, universities, eldercare and so on are key to a lot of areas that make up the social fabric of the United States. Catholic Charities is a strong advocate and relief agency for the poor, disadvantaged and dispossessed.

That is, of course, not driven by anything except the New Testament.

Actually, it was the Thinker or the Old Man or King Solomon in the Book of Ecclesiastes, and part of his problem was that he wasn’t hypocritical enough. However, remember the OLD TESTAMENT has limited positive and negative event horizons and were primarily based on illiterate tribesman’s stories that were told or sung over several centuries and more before being written down. So, 110 Degree Temperatures in the Canadian Province of British Columbia is something new under the sun; billion year old Antarctic Lake melting due to global climate change and draining into the Antarctic Ocean in about four days, is something new and would not be know without satellite imagery of the earth. The whole concept of satellite imagery would have confused the fuck out of the Empire of Jerusalem in the early first millenium BCE.

I guess that unlike Old Captain America, both old and Baby Monty were past their shelf lives

  7. almost 3 years ago on Two Party Opera

Well. I’m glad he won. On the other hand, his drawing skills, historical knowledge and snarky sense of humor really helped keep some of us out of despair.

First he vanishes because he’s going to run for Congress. Guess he didn’t win since he came back to drawing his commentary. Now, he vanishes because…? Is it a requirement for editorial cartoonists to be trust fund babies or take vows of poverty so they never have to fulfill commitments to their readers?

  9. about 3 years ago on Two Party Opera

Has Carroll found meaningful employment instead of artistic commentary on current events through the eyes of former Presidents and the occasional historical blip…

  10. over 3 years ago on Tough Town

Kristofferson wrote it — Cash sang it and despite the network, sang the part about “wishing god that I was stoned” as written rather than some nonsense the network suggeted. So Kris Kristofferson has something in common with Mick Jagger, who instead of the "Let’s spend some time together’, the Sullivan show’s suggestion, sang some mumble mouth thing, the rock singers way to escape not liking the lyrics.
