TIES: My own policy was never to wear a tie in our engineering office, but occasionally in a meeting with managers at least two levels above me that I didn’t previously know. At one such meeting (chaired by my manager), I wore a custom size-20 shirt and the company tie — my manager immediately asked, “Did somebody die?”

Neck ties (except clip-ons) are undeniable hazards when working on the manufacturing floor among moving equipment, but some a**hole mangers required ties for their salaried foremen. Ex-president Carter tried appearing tie-less in sweaters (his best idea), but politics soon dissuaded him.

Primary elections with low voter turn-out, allowing concentration of extreme factions, have replaced “smoke-filled rooms” of argumentative party regulars in selecting nominees. Good or bad?

“If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it— if it needs fixing, plagiarize!” So what successful system is there now to plagiarize?

  4. over 7 years ago on Baldo

I covered many overseas suppliers during 3-week trips, and wrote the basic trip report before I departed the USA; I made sure (without lying) that results met the report’s objectives. Gracie can probably do the same with her diary. As IBM says, “PLAN AHEAD!”.

If there were no capital, there would be no working classes – there would be only individual hunter-gatherers with no tools other than self-made.

Quit the job that doesn’t benefit the family.

In the 21st century, what happens when a mother-dependent boy boy marries a girl raised the same way?

  8. over 10 years ago on Doonesbury

Perry is now in Missouri to promote that state’s efforts to match Texas at the bottom of education funding.

This strip is possibly generated by a computer program, which arranges a series of repetitive nouns, adjectives, and verbs into overly long statements from which no reasonably intelligent person can derive a cogent argument.

  10. over 10 years ago on Ripley's Believe It or Not

Two human survivals after Denys sheep’’s-blood transfusion are attributed to the small amount of blood transfused. (See Wikipedia for full story – it’s fascinating, and involves a murder.)
