Woke originally was used by African-Americans during Jim Crow to remind one another to be aware, be careful, be woke. They needed to be aware of their surroundings and not do another that could cause retaliation from whites. Like being in a sundown town after dark, whistling at a white woman, etc. Anything that could get them lynched.
