It actually is that easy, that’s why it’s so hard…
Happiness is a state of mind. Embrace the good and work on the bad. Accept what you cannot change.
Much like the Serenity prayer (full version):
God, grant me the SerenityTo accept the things I cannot change…Courage to change the things I can,And Wisdom to know the difference.
Living one day at a time,Enjoying one moment at a time,Accepting hardship as the pathway to peace.Taking, as He did, this sinful world as it is,Not as I would have it.Trusting that He will make all things rightif I surrender to His will. That I may be reasonably happy in this life,And supremely happy with Him forever in the next.Amen.
“So you’re going to follow the better angels, then?”
“Uh … that’s kind of scary and might get people mad at me. Can I just stand around mumbling nonspecifically about how things are bad and it’s everyone’s fault but mine?”
What total rubbish, Stantisferbs. We’re not ALL suffering from collective PTSD. We’re fighting against a bunch of idiots, otherwise known as right-wing populists.
The hard part isn’t choosing to listen to our better side – it is doing it every single time. It is ignoring the voice of “just this once” ringing in your mind over and over and over again. For most people, we fall off the wagon learn a lesson with scars to remind us, whether physical, mental or emotional and it toughens us against that voice for the next period.
