There have always been conservatives, some who defended liberals to conserve the political state as they knew it. The philosophy of the republic presumes the examination of issues from the perspectives of right and left, then arriving at a consensus solution. The current crop of radicals calling themselves conservative are just that; Radicals, not Conservatives.
