I’m tired and in bed, but I believe Lorenz documented that behavior in "King Soloman’s Ring, RE Ethology the comparative study of animal behavior.

as a mail carrier, I recall a few doggies that hid in the bushes when I went through the gate and up to the porch to drop off the mail.

It wasn’t until I closed the gate behind me on the way out that the doggie came rushing out to the fence giving me holy hell for

having the audacity to venture onto his property

A little cocker spaniel I once had was barking madly at a nearby German shepherd only because she was hiding behind my legs at the time, all the while trying to get her tail, which she didn’t have much of, between her legs. By the way, the German shepherd was totally ignoring her!

That’s like the neighbor’s dog. Vicious behind the fence a kitten out.

    Boundaries beget bravery and barks.

    Leashes lead to lunges.
