Marigold: I am fascinated by your human holiday rituals! Phoebe: I think I'm learning a lot, knowing you. I've developed a whole new understanding of what "rituals" are. Marigold: Oh? Phoebe: I kind of thought they were food. Phoebe: Now I realize I was thinking of "victuals."
Marigold: Slabs of cranberry sauce are fascinating in either category.

    Eating is a ritual. Just ask my horse, "rip, tear, chew, chew, rip, tear, chew, chew … "

    Sometimes rituals lead to victuals! Like the carving of the Christmas turkey. Or, in my case, the Christmas lasagna.

    @The Wolf In Your Midst

    Hey, I always make lasagna for my family for Christmas, too! I thought we were the only ones.

    Actually, “victuals” is pronounced “vittles.” And now “vittles” has become its own word.

    Actually, “victuals” is pronounced “vittles”, just like on the old “Beverly Hillbillies” TV show. Still, very cute.

    If victuals are pronounced “vittles”, why aren’t rituals pronounce as “rittles”?

    As you can tell, I’ve never heard victuals pronounced either. I thought “vittles” was a slang term.

    Also, in England “Bethlehem” was ‘corrupted/shortened’ to “Bedlam,” so “vittles” could be “victuals” after being similarly ‘corrupted/shortened.’

    This makes sense as written, but not spoken, since “rituals” and “victuals” don’t actually rhyme. “Victuals” is properly pronounced “vittles”. Don’t ask me why.
