    There is a nearby reservoir where I can look out over the water to the sea. I go there for the quiet, except there are coots. Coots are a small irascible, duck-like birds and much like human beings. They have the conflicting motivations of being highly territorial and highly social at the same time. Every few minutes there is a “coot chase” as one drives another away from his part of the lake. Yet they are driven to feed close together and drift back into a group.
