It is, among other things, proof that the younger folks (up through about 30 years old, seems like) don’t actually like to read. They want crap poured in via the video. I hope it works out for them, but have my doubts.
I tried TikTok for a while. It failed the Turing test. No intelligent life detected.
But I think it helps explain my meme of the day:
How is it possible to discuss “rule of law” with people who actively prefer “law of the jungle”?
Alternate form: What’s the moral difference between hanging Mike Pence, guns for “schools” in China or the USA, and dead Ukrainians and dead Russian soldiers? I can’t see it.
Republic, actually. The US system was based on the Roman Republic, not on Athenian democracy. About the only thing Athenian democracy accomplished was the execution of Socrates.
TikTok seems to be yet another step towards “Fahrenheit 451” where people don’t read and they are entertained by “immersive” three walled televisions blasting brief videos at them.
I got my news recently from the Sunday Newspaper – which might not be as liberal a medial as it was in the past – on the list of Birthdays (that lists celebrities born on THAT DAY) they wished Trump a 6 day belated Birthday – and the article recapping the Thursday insurrection hearing was on the Opinions page.
It’s odd. When American soldiers laid down their lives in WW 2 they were very clear that they were fighting to protect democracy. Now the Republican party is convincing people that democracy is bad, and that they live in a Republic. This is somewhat similar to Hitler’s propaganda for the German people in the 1930’s, or Putin’s destruction of the fledgling democratic experiment in Russia. What is disturbing is that the USA is viewed as the country the created the first modern democracy. A Republic can exist as a democracy, as was originally intended for the USA, or it can become an oligarchy, theocracy or outright dictatorship. The thing about a democracy is that sometimes people who have different ideas than you will be in power.
Anyone else see the article about how China-based employees of ByteDance (TikTok’s parent company) have repeatedly been accessing nonpublic data about US TikTok users?
The U.S. Is not a democracy, it is a republic. The U.S. Constitution does not contain the words “democrat, democratic, or democracy”. Hower, Article 4 Section 4 guarantees every state a Republican form of government.

Tik-Tok is banned in India. There are any number of variants available, but none seem to be as popular as it once was.

And thank God the founders realized that a ‘democracy’ was nothing but mob rule and set America up as a Republic.
