My Wife and I used to have a beautiful Female German Setter named " Radar " after a Military Police Dog our good friend had in WW2 in Germany.( No not after Radar in MASH.) We lived 10 miles from the Blue Ridge Parkway in N.C. on an old tobacco farm. Radar loved water and fetching anything. We took her camping all the time in the Blue Ridges. When she hiked with us we usually had her on a lease as if she detected water she would look at us and take off to find it,then bark to let us know where to find Her. We would always find her jumping in and out of the creek, pond or whatever it was, like a little puppy. She would then find a stick or something and bring it to me to toss preferably into the water so she could dive in and fetch it.One time I told my Wife I was going to play a trick on Radar. I took a good stick and tied a piece of fish line securely to the middle of it and the other end securely to a small long shaped rock, just heavy enough to hold the stick barely under the water in a small pond by our camp site. I then got the stick with the rock called to Radar and told her to Fetch as I tossed it into the center of the pond. Radar took off, jumped in,got the stick and tried to start back, the rock kept catching on other rocks and would try to pull it out of her mouth, she could not figure out why she couldn’t just bring it back to us. She was so excited but puzzled, would look at us,then the stick floating, grab at the water and barking the whole time. She finally just stuck her head under the surface got a good grip and brought the stick with the rock dragging behind to me, dropped it by my feet and started to bark excitedly at the rock pulling at it then looking at me as if asking"Daddy, what’s going on,I tried to fetch it?" It was so funny with her puzzled expression on her face.I know you had to be there.Radar was a Loving Lady and we deeply miss her. You-all have a Great Day and Be Safe!( Sorry so long. ) We Hope You-all Had A Good 4th of July.
