I almost scared a kid out of the library when I was a public librarian, but it was due more to the fact that I’m a man and she was looking for a book on “the thing” (“Male thing or female thing?” “Female thing.”).
I wrote out the number for gynecology, showed her how the numbers went around the stacks, and told her that if she’d be more comfortable with the other librarian on duty, I’d be happy to call her to the reference desk.
