Maybe someday you’ll go to the moon, Snoopy.

The Soviet Union launched Laika the space dog in 1957, and she completed three orbits before dying after her spacecraft overheated. Mice were actually sent into sub-orbital flight by 1950. Just a bit over a month before this strip, on May 28, 1959, two squirrel monkeys were sent into space and recovered, one of them (Miss Able) died from an unrelated infection a few days after recovery of their space capsule, while the other (Miss Baker) lived long and prospered, passing away in 1984, 25 years after her historic space flight.

They switched to mice since the incident with a dog fetching the Moon back on Earth. Not to worry, the dog still got assurances he was a “good boy”
