Lucy walks with a piece of aper in her hand. She announces, "I'm going to count all the stars even if it kills me!"<BR><BR> She stands outside and look up at the stars. "People say I'm crazy but I know I'm not, and that's what counts!"<BR><BR> She sits on the curb. "I think I'll just sit here until it gets dark."<BR><BR> "This way I can take my time counting the stars..I can mark 'em down as they come out."<BR><BR> "Ha! There's the first one...Dum te da te dum..." She hums to herself.<BR><BR> She stands up: "There's another one...two...three..four...this is a cinch!" Lucy exclaims.<BR><BR> She runs down the block, pointing: "Five...six..oh, oh! Seven eight nine ten..."<BR><BR> She runs: "Eleven twelve thirteen! Oh, my!!" The numbers all run together as she rushes to count them off.<BR><BR> She drops her paper and covers her mouth with her hands: "They're coming out all over!" she cries.<BR><BR> "SLOW DOWN." [PANEL 11]: A number of Lucys run around, shouting out numbers: "Twenty-one, twenty-two, twenty-three, twenty-four...Thirty eight, thirty nine, forty, whew!....Forty-one, forty-two...." She gasps. [PANEL 12]: "Rats!" Lucy exclaims. She sits, panting, on the curb. The sky is dark and full of twinkling stars.<BR><BR>

At first she appears to have some sort of primitive tallying machine but then she reverts to pencil and paper.

The problem with counting stars is that not all of them are actually there. Many of those points of light are from places so distant that by the time that light gets here the star it came from has been dead for tens, hundreds, thousands, millions or even billions of years. It’s kind of humbling to think how you are actually seeing the past, both near and distant, when you look at the stars. At least some of those star systems have or had life and maybe art and music. That isn’t an opinion; it’s a certainty.
