King of the WIld Frontier, huh? I could’ve sworn it was — oh, I dunno — Kit Carson.

Davy Crockett did get elected to Congress. He probably didn’t want to be president.

Back then, Davy Crockett was all the rage, with all those coonskin hats, and that song by Bill Hayes.

In elementary school history I didn’t realise that the nation didn’t elect vice presidents the same way we did in class: the person who gets the second highest number of votes is VP. Took a couple of years to straighten that one out. I guess I wasn’t very bright, or maybe I just wasn’t paying attention.

They’re both wrong, of course. The first president of the United States was Peyton Randolph. His full title was “president of the United States in Congress Assembled”, often shortened to “president of the Continental Congress”. He was president from September 5 to October 22, 1774, and again from May 10 to May 24, 1775. George Washington didn’t become president until April 30, 1789.

George Washington hated the idea of political parties. He thought that people would be more loyal to their own party than towards the country. Now we see personality cults where people are more loyal to a specific individual than to their party.

Well at least Davy Crockett was an American and not European like Beethoven. So technically, Charlie Brown was closer.

I remember a Sunday strip, must’ve been around this time, where these two are arguing over whether Beethoven or Davy Crockett was better.

When I was his age, Davy Crocket should have been President. He was all over the weekly Disney TV show and wildly popular among boys.

Everyone knows Benjamin Franklin was Our First and Greatest President. In between inventing electricity and language. He also inspired his good friend Gerald Ford to invent the automobile.

Crockett RAN for President, but he lost. His big promise was to rid the nation of raccoons, and that only attracted fringe support.
