I feel the same way with Neil Diamond’s “Hello Again.”

Back when we still had an easy-listening radio channel there was one piece that played occasionally. It was so sad, it almost had me weeping even though it was beautiful. Of course the title was never announced as there wasn’t anybody really there so I have no idea what it was or who wrote the piece.

Eleanor Rigby. The Boxer. Vincent. Tears in Heaven. Hallelujah by Leonard Cohen as sung by k d laing at the 2005 Juno Awards. (Her other renditions are fine, but this one is heartbreaking.)

My favorite country singer, Teea Goans, has the most incredible, tear-inducing cover of “What’s Forever For”. It’s one of the most beautiful songs I’ve ever heard…and I love the original. I strongly suggest looking her up.

Some Hollywood writers got to discussing music, and one said his favorite song was “Stardust,” and he always got a little misty when he heard it. The second said he had to be by himself when “Melancholy Baby” was played. They turned to Robert Benchley and asked what his favorite song was. “Tea for Two,” replied Benchley. “Whenever I hear it, I positively pound on the table and sob!”

That’s me. I have been depressed for quite some time, but I enjoy listening to depressing music at times, I guess it’s cathartic.

Here’s an interesting read about “Gloomy Sunday – The Hungarian Suicide Song”.

A Christian group called Petra had a song called “For Annie” about a teen girl who commits suicide. That one always makes me cry.

Turn them on, turn them on

    Turn on those sad songs

    When all hope is gone

Why don’t you tune in and turn them on

    They reach into your room

    Just feel their gentle touch

    When all hope is gone

    Sad songs say so much
