Sublimely drawn portrait of Rush. I notice the penguin isn’t saying anything. “Call when the stench is gone.”

My admiration for Oliphant as an editorial cartoonist and artist increases with every submission. However, Rush in drag…my eyes!Plus, now this image is in my head, the horror! His ability to capture the blowhard and portray him in all his idiocy is priceless. His Cheney, Lil’ Bushie, Rummy and the rest are perfect. The man is a treasure!

I guess Rush ain’t gonna use the term “grab your ankles” any time soon…

While I’ve never been Specter’s biggest fan, I admire the honesty in which he made the switch – citing political expediency, as well as the fact that the Republican party has (my words) lost its way. It’s an important (but often ignored) lesson: Attempting to simultaneously appeal to stump-ignorant, race-bating, slack-jawed, knuckle-dragging, religious fetishists – as well as to cynical corporatist mysanthropes and self-loathing, sexually-closeted, white suburbanites will result in only temporary success. Eventually, the bile will reflux and cause purgation. The flaming package of lies that landed on America’s doorstep with the glazed-eyes Reaganites has slowly ruptured and is now seaping an ungodly stink. And all that Republicans can do in response is to nervously offer up more putrid stink; and they don’t even bother repackaging it! Astounding.

Pat is the Mozart of his profession.

This toon is a treasure. Every detail tells the story. Rush in drag and Specter and penguin walking out in silence says it all.

Baseed on his posts, I actually feel sorry for Stewie, living his angry, pathetic, marginalized existence.

One more thing about Barry Goldwate – he would have been appalled by the Rovian tactics that are now the mainstay of Republican political campaigns.

During the 1964 Presidentical campaign, one of LBJ’s top aides was busted by the cops while in a compromising position with another guy. And I mean in the act, not just in a ‘wide stance’ ala Larry Craig.

Ignoring the pleas of his campaign staff, Senator Goldwater refused to make political hay out of this incident…and this was AFTER the Johnson camp aired the infamous, ‘Daisy Girl’ tv ad.

Contrast THAT with the campaign tactics of the man who now occupies his old Senate Seat, “Obama wants to teach sex to five-year-olds!”

By today’s standards Goldwater was liberal on many social issues.

Not so much a liberal as a libertarian.

Good post, dred. I like Heinlein’s formulation, which is much-loved by libertarians, that a “rational anarchist” believes there is no such thing as a State – only men. (And presumably women - this was in 1966.) Trouble is, anarchy, however rational, isn’t really a viable form for large-scale, interdependent, technological civilizations. At least it doesn’t seem likely to be, since it means pretty much “every man for himself.” Seems to me they are making assumptions about the inherent goodness of humanity that would make William Jennings Bryan blanch.

By the way, “anarchy” doesn’t mean “every man for himself”, at least with the usual connotation; it simply means “without rulers.” The three sub-definitions under the first division of Webster’s definition are (a) absence of government; (b) a state of lawlessness or political disorder due to the absence of governmental authority; and (c) a utopian society of individuals who enjoy complete freedom without government. The first of these is emotionally neutral, the second is certainly undesireable, and the third is highly desireable. “Cooperative anarchy” is not a contradiction in terms, and indeed there are communities which run/have run successfully along those lines (although it is acknowledged that these work BEST when they are SMALLEST).

I’m NOT an anarchist, by the way, because I believe that government is the best way to protect the individual, not from the excesses of too much government, but from the excesses of those INDIVIDUALS who would victimize other INDIVIDUALS if given a free hand. Those who oppose “government interference” in “free enterprise” are the REAL anarchists we need to be wary of. They are FAR more dangerous than some unkempt black-flag-waver, and they are the ones who espouse a philosophy of “every man for himself” (sometimes phrased as “Take whatever you can grab”).

He’s been pushed to the rear of the Seniority line by Reid and Co. Senility will happen before his Seniority.

Why on earth would ANYONE listen to Limbaugh for years? I listed once, in 1993. I got the point. I didn’t need to listen again. Saved a lot of time.
