If done consistently, they work on some children.

I was spanked as a child, and it only took one spanking. After that , my Dad would warn me with “Do you want a spanking?”, and my answer was an instant “No”. It kept me from making additional mistakes.

The parent needs to administer the spanking so the kid realizes why they’re being punished. There is a huge difference between a spanking and a beating. Beatings are abuse, not discipline.

When I was a kid I got spanked occasionally, and I preferred it to other punishments like grounding or having the TV taken away for a week. Spankings are done and over with quickly. I didn’t like them of course and tried to avoid them, sometimes when we got out of line my dad had only to start removing his belt and we got back in line quickly.

It depends on who the child is, maybe. I know some kids that would burst out crying with just a firm look, and others that need a more direct approach. I never minded being sent to my room, my imagination was similar to Kate the Great (check out Sherpa comics), so being sent to my room meant more play time, unless it was to wait for a spanking.

Getting sent to my room worked on me, at least insofar as I felt unhappy and knew why.

Spanking today is considered abuse. In my day, it was considered proper punishment. Look at kids today compared to kids of 30 + years ago. BIG DIFFERENCE!

Personally, I think it depends on the kid. I got spanked too on rare occasions, but for me the revoking of privileges like TV, time with friends, etc. seemed to be more effective. If you take away what a kid loves, like TV or video games for a week or two, than can work wonders more than a few swats on a behind that can be soon forgotten
