The ‘powdered’ glass brought back a distant memory. Many years ago, my best friend and I were invited to a fraternity “Gone With the Wind” party by the two men we had just started dating [during the late ‘60s’ re-release of the original movie]. It started with a fancy "champagne’ bus ride from Lincoln to Omaha for dinner (the champagne was actually beer). At dinner, trying to be on our most dignified behavior, I ordered a Margarita and she ordered a Tom Collins (we were newly 21 and this was our first time ordering cocktails). When they came, we each had a large champagne saucer with white around the edge and we took a sip—and made a face. We didn’t realize it until later but the glasses had been switched around — my Margarita had powdered sugar around the edge and her Tom Collins had the salt. It took us both a long time to try either drink again. But that was not the most memorable part of the evening! During the movie, every time Dixie was played, our dates and the rest of their fraternity brothers all stood up, cheered, and waved confederate flags. Dixie was played a lot. Following the 60-mile bus ride home (which was by that time rather raucous), I don’t think either of us ever saw our ‘dates’ again — can’t even remember their names.

When I order a Marguerita, I always tell them no salt. Maybe next time I should say no dandruff.
