Man: Ah-ha! I knew it! Nature's adaptation process
Oh I get it, there are so many of them that they can set traps for people. LOL
He looks like the curious type. Go ahead…make my day.
Coyotes have become quite urbanized.

That’s because they’re big fans of ZZ Top
Guess who’s going to be dinner?
”the polar bears are moving into other areas, where prey is easier to find …They aren’t quite in the cities yet”
Ain’t it the troof. Speaking of predators and prey, climate change or no, the cities will find those predatorial bears’ habitat soon enough, just like they’ve found all the rest of the wildlife habitat.

Too soon old, too late smart
soon it’ll be a buck and a half just to see em.
Again with the bears hiding just around the corner or hiding just inside the store.
Now I ask you is that just(ice)?

I know, I know! Why don’t you come over to my place and we’ll get on my computer and blog about it.
‘Gladly’, the cross-eyed bear.
We have the coyotes and black bears roaming our neighborhoods. Still got a while before the polar bears come down our way.

NO, in fact, it’s (wait for it)……………….unbearable!
I don’t find this political at all. It’s a matter of semantics, true skepticism and scientific research. It’s a matter of difference in though process given evidence. I personally feel that bear will have a lot of food.
Who is being political? Wiley, for a cute strip, or you, for imposing your meaning upon it?
I’ve heard it said that sometimes a comic strip is just a comic strip.
…or something like that….
Love it! Adaptation at its finest… ;)
There is an enormous difference between using a something topical as a vehicle for a sight gag and editorializing on that topic. This cartoon is the former, not the latter.
And now we know where the “fair-and-balanced” news network got those e-mails from..
I didn’t realize that Thornton was doing cameo’s … I wonder when he’ll make his next appearance in Sherman’s Lagoon.
No, Wiley, you always fail to apprehend that you ARE making editorial comments, or at least you consistently fail to acknowledge it. If the bear just wants to eat a human, he could have any number of traps set up to entice a fat male to come into his lair, but you CHOSE to utilize the thought process whereby a polar bear is calling global warming a “hoax” in order to create a trap for his prey.
Seeing as we are having some kind of sham global government meeting in Copenhagen and the recent hacked e-mail controversy floating in the public consciousness, this strip qualifies as editorializing, whether you like it or not.
Habanero: Wiley may fail to understand or appreciate that he is making an editorial comments. He does not apprehend (meaning capture). Therefore: a comic is just a comic. Quit reading between the lines to determine another’s political leanings, and learn to enjoy the humor.
Now if that guy was a clergyman he would be considered divinity with nuts.
some great posts!
Let me add my little take on things. It is true the encroachment on natural habitats of WILD animals causes problems, but lets draw an analogy.
Those who consider WILD animals WILD, lets say those are the literalists ie the ‘heartless’ conservative bunch. Whereas the liberals among us, don’t see a WILD animal, but a complex soul, a domesticated animal, but for the grace of God, trapped in a furry suit. (ok ok…not ALL wild animals have fur, to you ‘literalists’ of convenience on the left) Anyway, notice how that understanding the conservative ‘fringe’ lacks enables the human to transcend the limits of species…and communicate with our …er….WILD bretheren…..
(Now dear friends, on any side of the political spectrum, please don’t take this seriously. It was meant in fun, honest! )
Speaking as a looney lefty liberal who has been sucked in by the whole global warming hoax (sigh…) I’d really like to see that evidence. So I guess I’d end up as polar bear food as well. 8(
Spok, nice try, but apprehend was the correct word! I could enjoy the humor, but religion and politics have that well-known impact on relations…global warming pushes buttons, just like religious references.
It’s humorous because Polar Bears cannot live in a warm environment.
Non-sequitur lacks penguins.
Bdaysuit-interesting, because here in DC we have polar bears at the National Zoo. They seem to survive quite well in July and August, when the temperatures stay around 90 degrees, especially in August. Also, doesn’t it get warm in Alaska, although I’ll concede that it doesn’t last long. I guess that’s when they put their fur coats in the dry cleaners before winter sets in!
It’s funny because Global Warming Hoaxers won’t actually examine or review the evidence, they’ll just read the sign (or wait for Beck, Hannity, or Limbaugh to read it to them) and go to bed tonight and sleep soundly knowing in their hearts that the Right is RIGHT!
Wildcard24365-YOU AIN’T WRONG! BTW, there is no “evidence”, only manipulations done to fit their pre-conceived theory. That flies in the face of true scientific investigatiion.
It’s a funny ‘toon.
Besides, the bear is an escapee from the local zoo.
Sure seem to be a lot of climatologists commenting here (either that or people who think a bit of reading on the internet is enough to master an extremely complex science).
iantheevil-it is only “an extremely complex science” because the scientists conducting the research have “fudged the facts” which, as I said before, flies in the face of true scientific research. In true scientific research, a theory is to be developed; experiments are to be conducted to either PROVE OR DISPROVE that theory; and THEN conclusions are to be drawn. That process didn’t happen with the “Global Warming” theory. The theory was developed, and then evidence was manipulated to support the theory! (Reminds me of EVILution)
Loooong list - must be a hot button for lots of people.
We’re just an experiment in progress - someone once said that there is no indication that intelligence is a survival trait. we’ll see if we make it. If not, Mother Nature will try something else.
Gee, someone who thinks Global Warming is a hoax also doesn’t believe in evolution. What a surprise.
Let me try again… it’s called topic humor, folks, just like what you see on late night tv or in the New Yorker. It is not making any editorial statement or taking a position, just having fun with the topic itself.
It’s truly sad that this needs to be explained for some people.
The green house effect , (caused by gasses in the atmosphere) is what warms the world. With out it we’d be burnt crisp or freeze every 12 hours. It’s in balance now, like a teeter totter. If it gets unbalanced even by a little, it will tilt one way or the other. Both scenarios would be bad and should be prepared for, because we sure as heck are not going to stop pumping green house gasses into the air , at an ever increasing rate. I keep a fire extinguisher in the house, even though there is no proof I will ever have a fire…
I’m not too bothered by the whole global warming thing. We learned in biology that the planet used to be a lot hotter than it is now. That’s how we got all the oil (carboniferous period). We also learned that the atmosphere used to have a different gaseous make-up. So I figure if the world is getting warmer again, even if humans are contributing, the planet as a whole will adapt just fine. Of course, we may go the way of the dinosaurs in the process, but the majority of species either evolve or go extinct eventually anyway.
I refuse to consider the theory that everything taught to me in school is a government conspiracy of lies, in case anyone was thinking that.
Is it possible that the age of the mammals was just too short-lived?
Not if that bear has anything to do with it!
okay politics aside -
what is the bear holding?
I can’t make it out?
Bugsy, thanks for the car pictures. I’d love to have an old T-Bird, too. I’ve always wondered why they turned it into a giant car.. It was fine the way it was.. Speaking of which, what is it about our culture that takes something almost perfect, and tries to make it better, thereby ruining it. That’s how we get MTV that doesn’t play music, Headline News that doesn’t do news headlines and a weather channel that hardly does weather anymore. Fortunately that never happened to the Mustang. It was affordable, got good millage, and was cool as hell…Great Mark Twain quote, dude.. I’ll paraphase it here for people who don’t want to go back to yesterday.
I’d probably prefer heaven for the climate, but I’d prefer hell for the good company and conversation.
got it - a pencil….that in itself is funny
Of course global warming is a hoax. Just look at Greenland whose people are loving it for the most part.
It’s still gonna cost a buck and a half just to see em.

What I recommend is, just be amused at them; people will find something to argue about anytime. They seem to me as being some of the characters you put in the strip. Hey, what better way to get more material than comments at Gocomics.com or any other site?
But it IS taking a stand on the position! Do I have to analyze your own strip to demonstrate this to you? It is truly “sad” that you have to explain your position? It is baffling to me that you don’t think this is commentary, but merely “topical”.
The polar bear is laying a trap for the unsuspecting idiot who is predisposed to disbelieve global warming!
Not only that, but this scene is a precursor to the foolish human’s next act of stepping off the world’s stage, an “adaptation process” of nature. Thus, those who are predisposed not to believe in global warming are going to be wiped off the earth by the supposed effects of the process which they deny. That, my friend, is TAKING A POSITION. You’ve taken a position your entire career and denied it every step of the way.
Wow, there is so much one could reply to here, especially to certain repeat offenders… but I’ll skip that and just say that I love today’s comic! If I had the extra $$$ I’d buy a print of this! Stupid economy, always ruining my fun!
Wiley, I just wanted to say that I love your comics. I have been a fan for years. As far as the comments on this strip - I am on to you. You just love to draw bears. :)
i say let the bear eat him and the rest of us can go on and read the comics. thanks wiley
Wiley’s bears have always displayed a higher sense of intellect applied than the “intelligent” humans. These folks are unable to comprehend that bears I’ve known personally have definitely shown higher intellect than climate change deniers, cell phone using drivers (texting, hand held, or hands free), stock purchasers trusting “trustworthy” brokers like Madoff, war jumping neocons (WMDs my tush), or toy buyers at Christmas going nuts (literally) over the latest “must have” fad.Yep, preserve the right to arm bears!
AS we move closer to the truth, the funnier it gets
Won’t the polar bears have to worry about their cholesterol on a long pig diet?
Global warming, who knows, but, global climate change is quite evedent.
Wiley said: “Let me try again… it’s called topic humor, folks, just like what you see on late night tv or in the New Yorker. It is not making any editorial statement or taking a position, just having fun with the topic itself.
“It’s truly sad that this needs to be explained for some people.”
What’s truly sad is that we’ve become so politicized that some people will see you as making an editorial statement and/or taking a position no matter how emphatically or often you post to explain otherwise. Ideology über alles…
I’ll beginning to think Wiley has appropriated my competition tag line!!!
That’s gotta be a win for a simple mind like me.
And a win to me is more important to me than politics about bears, where they live, what they might eat and whether they can actually hold a marker pen AND write in ledgible english.
Perhaps we can train the polar bears to eat the coyotes?
Hey Wiley! Can you work in a strip about how the world is round? That ought to get the rest of them out and breathing heavily.
Polar Bears are becoming urbanized. Now it’s our turn to fear extinction. (But not because of them.)
Great! One of the best. I don’t care if its’ editorialising or not, its great TOPICAL humor!
And anyone doubting climate change can come down here and visit Adelaide where they had temps over 100f for days and days… in early spring. Also come and experience the joys of a 15 year drought.
Love the ‘toon! and I apologize, I read a lot of politics into them a lot of the time. just proves there’s one )or more) born every minute…..
I woke up this morning to 6 inches of snow Wonder when “Global Warming” will start. This on top of the Coldest Summer in 100 years.
HEY AL GLOBAL WARMING IS FAKE!!!
Seriously? That’s gotta be a joke. Nobody is so stupid anymore that they can’t understand this, are they? The poles melt, the world’s weather patterns are messed up. It will still snow, dude. We received 18 inches during our years first snowfall. CRAZY! (Wait a second, crazy weather patterns…perhaps there is something to this climate change stuff!)
How can you be pro-pollution, anyways? That takes a very special kind of cynical.
Sometimes a comic strip is just a comic strip.
Thank you, Wiley.
memime, yup, dude’s gonna get the proof written on his heart with a pencil..
The world has warmed six degrees since the glaciers 10,000 years ago, More than two, since the industrial age started a couple of hundred years ago. That’s a third of the warming in a fraction of the 10,000 years. You do the math. Personally, since climate change will change the weather patterns, and cause Michigan to have really cold and snowy winters, I’m all for it! I love winter!. Glad I’m not near lowlands where hurricanes happen though. I hate stackin’ sandbags…Hey, you raise the temperature on the pot of water, it boils more violently. Hurricanes are the bubbles…But, hey, no big whoop…..
It’s truly sad that this needs to be explained for some people. - Sad Wiley
Not so much.
Sometimes it’s entertaining for your readers to play the occasional game of whack-a-mole with the Most Deserving Clueless. Cyberlife imitates cyberart, and … is there really any difference? It becomes an extension of your strip.
None of this is real, anyway. Except for your paycheck. (and I’m not getting a cut of that, but I’m not complaining - yet)
For example: why bother explaining things to someone like HabaneroBoink? Is there a rule that says you - or we - must? I know you do so out of courtesy, but seems to me, given the attitude of some arrogant readers who Know How Your Strip Should Be Run, How about a response like this when he insists that we All Take Him Very Very Seriously
At the very least, I’d say you don’t owe them a single word of explanation. As they say down south where I was born, “I ain’t takin’ you t’ raise…” Or as you may have heard it around these parts, “Don’t feed the trolls.”
Speaking of links, is there a help text or website available for TypePad (used for these comment, right?) so I can figure out how to make clickable hypertext links, instead of posting raw url links?
It sorta spoils the effect when I post something like
DeaconDrJones: Check your facts. While the North Pole has been melting, at the South Pole the ice pack is increasing. Maybe that’s why Austrailia is in a 14 year drought.
Dracip - Have you started a bonfire behind your house and then called the fire department and told them that your house is on fire?
That’s what those scientists in England and other places, along with Al Gore, have done.
Again, some of you are commenting on things that you only read about and have not experienced. polar bears are growing in population in both Alaska and Canada, and its the garbage heaps that draw them into cities – not lost of habitat. Please folks do some real research before looking a tad bit silly. Nanouk (Talkeetna, Alaska)
Big mistake. You are assuming that climate change deniers are interested in science or proof. They believe getting cold in the winter disproves global warming. (While global warming actually just means an average rise of a couple of degrees which also will result in more heavy snow storms.)
Why is it sad to have explain to me?
