There are a number of ways to appease people who notice that money is trickling upwards..Accelerating the rate of the upwards trickle isn’t on the list.
Wasn’t there a war fought in 1775 more or less against the Aristocracy, who undoubtedly considered themselves the wealth creators of the time and deserving of their wealth advantage? One can imagine the wealthy resenting the divisions created by those who thought wealth should be more evenly distributed. They might even have called it class warfare. Today wealth disparity in America has never been greater.
What’s really funny is the “blue collar” support of Mitt and the neocons, whose personal philosophy is quite simple: “What’s mine is mine. What’s yours is mine too.”
The real issue on “income equality” isn’t at all how much the wealthy may have accumulated, it is HOW THEY ACCUMULATED IT! Actual “liberals” have no problem at all with honest and regulated Capitalism that does indeed allow anyone with sweat, or better ideas, to succeed and accumulate status and wealth. It is when that status and wealth is gained through abuse, of people, resources, or society, or outright criminality, that it stops being “Capitalism”.
Teddy Roosevelt stood firmly, as a Republican, AGAINST such abuse in fighting the corporate “trusts”. “Reaganomics”, which Reagan didn’t really create, and the neocons, stand FOR corporate monopolies, and indeed “legalizing” abuse, AND outright criminality, for the benefit of the “few”.
That isn’t exactly what the Declaration of Independence, or the Constitution were about, and for anyone in other than the “1 %” to support the abuse, is ludicrous ignorance.
Billionaires like William Buffett and Bill Gates have changed lives with their generosity. Another billionaire recently gave 100million to take care of Central Park in NYC.Money IS a finite commodity representing an exchange of goods and services internationally, People are making money by gambling on what the value of a given currency is going to be and when. Other people are hoarding their money because in our cannibalistic capitalism, having stock in the market makes many companies vulnerable to absorption, gutting, and discarding. You have to have money to repel an attack by another company. Its legal, its capitalism. Ownership is a good thing.Prior to the late 1970s, military service introduced diverse people from all levels of society. Many of the billionaires we know now, do not have that same connection with other paradigms and have no understanding, appreciation, or compassion from people of other social settings. As a ‘countrified child’ of the deep south, I have looked up the nose of a few fancy suits and I assure you, its not just race, its class.Some billionaires have no class. Men like JP Morgan and Andrew Carnegie built railroads, bridges over rivers, buildings. Yes, they were men of their times with all the avarice and cruelty that entails, but they gave back to their country and their people.There are also the millionaires bending every law of legality and morality till it screams in order to become billionaires.One way we could tax these folks is to tell them they have to pay X more per year in taxes, but they can pick from a list prepared by the government, or suggest another place for consideration. (I don’t want to help build two miles of highway, but I know a levee that needs repair) I know I’d like to pick where my tax dollars go.Neo, I lost control of my keyboard and my fingers went beserk. Wish there was somewhere else to talk about this.We just need Billionaires with more class.C.

It’s more complex than that. .“…….“From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs”? Is that what you want?….”.And it’s more complex than a Marxist slogan..You seem to be implying you should not have to pay taxes. I’ll answer by asking a fundamental question. If you don’t pay taxes, where does the government get the money to run the country? Nations that try to get by on borrowed or created money eventually fail. If you love your country, you do not want it to fail, and so you will pay your fair share.
I just saw Nick Anderson (and Pat Bagley from a Salt Lake City newspaper) on the BBC this morning! There was a quick segment on the American elections and they interviewed both cartoonists. Cool! (I also recognised a couple of his ’toons when they provided examples during the segment)
