If Saudi Arabia won’t let Christian churches or Jewish temples be built on their sand, so be it. Those are their laws and intolerant policies. It has nothing to do with our inclusive Constitution and our tolerance for freedom of religious expression. Why, I believe we even let Japanese tourists visit the USS Arizona Memorial.
And my saying that I don’t like the idea of a mosque being built there is protected by the first amendment. So the basis of the argument is that sometimes the first amendment is a good thing(like when it coincides with my goals/beliefs) and other times it’s a bad thing(when it doesn’t). I know that both sides use it this way and it is their right to do so. Ain’t it grand.
So here is what I propose; build a place of worship for each religion and each denomination of those religions either at or near ground zero, then we can all be happy or unhappy as the case may be. Lets start with the church that was destroyed at ground zero and has yet to be rebuilt. The port Authority can put the deal they made with the church back on the table.
We aren’t Saudi Arabia, or Northern Ireland, the Vatican in Rome, Tibet, China, or even Australia where immigration is strictly limited - Islam is just the “enemy de jour” but our intolerance has never been limited- try being an American CITIZEN of Japanese ancestry in 1942. Or even a black or mulatto 20 years later in Florida, Georgia, or Alabama.
I often have to wonder if intolerance isn’t the actual “American ideal”.
The hatred (because that’s what it really is) directed toward Muslims since 9/11 is reminscent of that aimed at Native Americans since whites set foot on North America. That hatred for “the other,” that belief that “the other” wasn’t really human like the whites, was justification enough to assuage the conscience of Euro-immigrants as they tried to wipe out an entire race and seize land and other resources. That hatred of “the other” made it okay to round up Americans of Japanese descent and put them in internment camps. That hatred of “the other” somehow makes it okay to propose rounding up anyone who looks like he/she might be an illegal and dumping him/her into internment camps.
Last night, I heard a man express the necessity of building this culture center as planned. He said it didn’t matter whether or not he approved of having the center and its prayer room two blocks from the WTC site. What mattered was that every time Americans protested the proposed center (screaming/cursing/signs and what not) and other mosques in the US, those Americans were handing Osama Bin Laden a victory. Those protests would be used to recruit more terrorists and would make it easier for Bin Laden and his minions convince Muslims world wide that WE were fighting ALL of THEM. We were putting our troops in danger. We were putting our citizens in danger. And I agree with him.
We ARE NOT Saudi Arabia or any other Muslim country. We are the United States of America. We have a Constitution that is the envy of the rest of the world, and we are SUPPOSED TO BE better than those who would oppose us. We sure aren’t acting like it, though.
Wing Nut: no one contests your right to hold your bigoted silly opinions, or to speak them out loud. Therefore, no violation of your1st Amendment rights. We just have the same right to speak our opinion of you and your “thoughts”. Please do try to differentiate between discussion and suppression. I know, it’s hard through all that fog, but try…please.
Ahh, the favorite “intolerance” card, another word used to try to shut others up.
I don’t suppose the opposition to this mosque has ANYTHING AT ALL to do with the 3,000 people who were brutally murdered by radical Muslims would it?
Actually I thought that would be a big fat DUH!, just like it was a terrible idea for the White House to authorize planes to fly in the area of Ground Zero.
I guess the obvious can be ignored like everything else.

The world is coming to an end if they aren’t the “wisest”, the “most kindly”, the most knowledgeable. In fact, they aren’t any of that . Even their “kindness” comes at the expense of others blood, sweat, and tears.
