Best Nancy since 1950s Bushmiller. Hang it on a star, it belongs to the world now!

So far, this new version of Nancy seems rather unfocused and hard to really sink your teeth into. We know that this is clearly a hard reset, but it’s hard to tell if Jaimes is relying on the assumption that the audience already knows the characters, or if these strips are meant to be a re-introduction, as it were.

Bushmiller’s NANCY has often been described by critics as having a sort of zen quality to it. Jaimes seems to be shooting for a similar vibe, but it remains to be seen how she’ll stick to that. Personally, it’s not my thing——too limited in scope. But at least Bushmiller had an already established cast that his audience knew well before he sort of evolved into that stripped-down, minimalist aesthetic. With Jaimes, again, it’s unclear whether she’s treating this as a re-introduction to characters and a world the audience knows, or if this is meant as a first-time introduction to a hypothetical audience that has never heard of NANCY at all.

It’s actually kind of difficult to envision how Fritzi would look in this style, and we don’t even know if she’ll be in this version at all.

Colors were a bit better today. It will still take a while to get used to every character having an unwashed neck.

It is really annoying to see all that empty space between a W and a A and how close the O is to every U.

Hand lettering would never be so badly spaced.

So…. How many more days will the GoComics Nancy bar have Gilchrist in it?

I miss Guy’s Nancy because he had joy, sweetness, family values and some little words for God. But, my best wishes for Olivia Jaimes. I hope you succeed with the new Nancy and I hope you brings us fun.

Web:“Nancy” appears in 79 newspapers with an estimated readership of more than 3 million people, the syndication company said.

The real test is if a month from now, Nancy is still running in 79 newspapers.

It is interesting that in the 1980s Gus Arreola ended Gordo because it was dropping below 100 newspapers.

what is Olivia Jaimes real name? or IS there a real Olivia James at all? with its lack of any backgrounds-duplicated panels etc etc this strip could be put together by a machine with the help of a graphic design student-p.s.again with the floating furniture???

Well…….it’s a little better today, it actually got me to smile.

Everybody has their own favourites, (mine was Gilchrist,) but I like to look on each style as their own and not just compare. I read Bushmiller back in the day, though I often couldn’t find the humour in it- it was really very dry.

BUT- I still read it and enjoyed it. Sort of like the way I enjoy a veggie burger now and then. I’m not trying to fool myself into thinking I’m eating beef, I’m just enjoying it for what it is.

    Same with this new artist.

She should have invited Nancy and Sluggo over. They could have played video games together.

Perhaps the new style is from a female perspective.

I am enjoying this just as its own thing. And I found today’s comic wryly funny. Of course it helps to not compare this Nancy with any other cartoonist’s version;)

I like it. I wish the non-main cast characters were drawn in the same style as Nancy and the regulars.

    Anybody believe in conspiracy theories?

Nancy is being run deliberately as a test case.

If you go to the Gilchrist site it says about Nancy, “Syndicated internationally in 80 countries and some 400 newspapers, Nancy has a viewership of 57 million readers around the world.” And when he left it was in fewer than 80 newspapers. My goodness. Free fall. Not a ringing endorsement of Gilchrist’s commercial appeal.

    400 newspapers in 2017 to 79 in 2018 when he quit. https://www.aguygilchristproduction.com/about/

I have been reading all of the positive and negative reviews of the new Nancy since the first day without commenting as I wanted to see if the new cartoonist would “grow on me”. Well I am happy to say that this morning I found myself looking forward to seeing what was in store in today’s strip. I liked it and like the simplicity of the drawing style as well as the modern twist to things like the teacher playing video games at home for the gag line. I am now looking forward to each new day’s strip just as I do with the old Bushmiller strips in the “Nancy Classics”. I was never much of a Gilchrist fan.

I am a college professor and this is pretty much what I did all of my spring break. I think I am going to print this out and hang it on the door to my office. I have loved the new Nancy so far! Go Comics needs to update the Nancy page to reflect the new (and talented) writer!

The various versions of Nancy are not an either/or issue for me. I like them all. I read somewhere that what distinguished Mr. Bushmiller’s Nancy was “high contrast.” If you look at this work you will note that there are no shadows or shading. Ms. James’ version has a little shading but it’s minimal. Kind of reminds me of Seth’s work (e.g. Clyde Fans). But I really like the dry, minimalist humor of the new Nancy.

Perhaps the coloring of the strip is trying to invoke the feeling of finding an old Bushmiller strip in a tattered, yellowing newspaper.

So far I’m not impressed with the artwork or the content, but change isn’t easy so I will give it some time. I was really enjoyed Guy’s drawing and content. I’ve been reading Nancy since the late 1950s, so I’ve seen the different styles, and Guy’s version had a lightness and joy to it that I really enjoyed. But, like I said, I’ll give it some time.

I have to wonder if the teacher is setting a bad example for kids reading the strip. Those “chips” aren’t the healthiest thing she could be feasting on. She should be seen eating….oh, I don’t know……cornbread, maybe?

I admit that the only reason I stuck with Gilchrist was because of the way he drew Fritzi; with this new version, that doesn’t matter anymore; I like it…

Its been a week and I’m already over it. I would rather have the Guy G. reruns than whatever this is. There isn’t any thing remotely close to Nancy except the shape of the characters. No more family values or plot or happy characters. GoComics, even if these end up being new, please run the Guy G. strip somewhere. I won’t be reading this version.
