I think the last WWI vet died in the last year or so. WWII vets are in their late 80’s. My late husband was drafted durin the Korean conflict and he would be 84 now.
Hey Susan Newman, nothing wrong with a redneck. That’s a hard working person whose neck is red because they’re farmers, loggers, masons, roofers, etc, etc, who work with their head down and sun beating on their necks.. If you’re stalled on the side of a road, you better hope it’s a good ole boy redneck who stops to help you.

Actually, Uncle More is a spring chicken, compared to Phil! Phil tried to enlist in the Marines during World War II, but got turned down because he was an inch too short. I have an Uncle who was on a ship headed for Pearl Harbor when they received news that Pearl Harbor had been bombed. He was part of the “clean-up” crew who arrived after the bombing and had a hand in getting everything patched back up again. He turned 90 a couple of years ago and some charity group offered Pearl Harbor vets a free trip back to Pearl Harbor, and he took advantage of it. Korea was where everyone was headed when our senior class graduated from high school. Kind of creepy that Korea is back in the news again – still causing trouble, so many years later.

In regard to ages of characters…. remember, this is a reboot. All the characters in the strip ARE the age they are drawn….not how long they have been in the paper. Yes…Fritzi was twenty in 1922 in the papers….doesn’t mean a thing now. I’m not discounting, or erasing 80 years of Nancy….but we are in the now…in the funnies! To all those who have served or are actively serving, and to all the families of those who serve, or have served…..I thank you for your sacrifice and devotion and service to this great country. To those of you who have served under other flages, I salute you as well. The new characters in the strip are dedicated, and inspired by YOU. They will be an ongoing “thank you” from me and NANCY and the whole gang. God bless.

No one has walked away…or not understood the strip….and also have brought many old characters back. Fritzi was not in the strip during Jerry Scott’s tenure. Over 10 years. Neither was Pee Wee. I brought back Rollo, Irma….and added Jackie, Homer, and Maria. Ernie enjoyed telling stories in the earlier times before he became ill and turned much of his day to day over to assistants. The strip will continue to have a gag a day format…with occasional stories to move us all along! Thank you for caring!
Susan….A Redneck planted, tended, and picked those vegetables and fruit you had today. Drove the truck to get them to you. Probably wrote the song you’re humming while you’re working out in the gym in a building a Redneck built….that you got to on roads and bridges that Rednecks paved and constructed……I think you get my point. Every Prophet and slave in The Bible was a Redneck. Jesus’ disciples were rednecks. I was a Redneck….working in the tobacco fields as a child. Working Rodeos and Horse Shows as a young man. When you do manual labor under the hot sun….you are a “redneck”. ‘More and Les have " trucker’s tans" too! Unless you have a thing about Southern folk…..and lump them all into some little group of bigots……then….I think you’ll eventually like “rednecks” ‘More and Les! And if you DO have some misguided or old school idea of who and what a working man of the south is all about…..visit us in my state of Tennessee. Us high fallutin’ intellectual rednecks and cosmopolitan hillbillies will be waitin’ on ya. I’ll probably be playin’ guitar and singin" in the Holiday Inn Lounge over by Vanderbilt or at The Bluebird. You stop in and say “hey”! :)
In case you missed it yesterday……God bless Annette. My big brother used to go to the movies about every Friday night with his buddies and when I was a little kid he would take me to the movies with him. He would only go to rock ‘n roll movies. Like Elvis, and the beach movies, and Beatles et cetera. So I probably saw every Annette beach movie . I was seven and my brother and his buddies were 17. We ALL loved her. She really WAS this country’s sweetheart. I truly honor her strength, grace, and how she handled her MS. God bless Annette. There will never be another. What a gracious icon.Yes. I will do a tribute in the strip. It takes a while to reach you in the papers and here and elsewhere online, as I am many weeks ahead. But……she was part of generations and generations. One of a kind. After all these years of her painful illness, we can be comforted knowing she now knows peace.

I was in the Marines in the 70s and my gotee is gray, almost white and hair, it’s gone!So the beard fits well wth Uncle More!
