Nancy: What does your father do for a living, Alvin?
Boy: Can you keep a secret?
Boy: Will you promise not to tell a soul?
Boy: He makes antique furniture.
Yea Nancy wouldn’t want that getting around.
Yup, he makes antique furniture for present day Middlebury Vermonters who have no life.
New furniture made old.
At the time this strip came out, probably just a simple contradiction joke. Now? Purveyor of fake antiques.
Nowadays, it’s “repro vintage” furniture, and tends to come from Asia.
“Now remember, you promised to keep this a secret!”
Dis kids fadder isn’t on the up and up…
I remember a sequence in Leslie Torner’s “Captain Easy” where the Kallikak family [carrying on the tradition of hillbilly humor] was being used in a scam by the wealthy McKee to make new furniture look like antiques by letting them use it for a couple of days. They found out what was happening and decided to help, and let’s just say it didn’t work out.
COMMISSIONER REAGAN: Can you keep a secret? ASSISTANT D.A. REAGAN: Sure. COMMISSIONER: So can I!!
Cool hat, Alvin.
What’s so cloak and dagger about that?
If you think about it, nothing says his dad wasn’t making future antique furniture, since it would be, now.
Can’t make it, can only fake it.
