Wow. Subtle, yet oh so effective at making the point. Poor Grandmother – it makes me want to take her some goodies myself now.

And I hope Karma pays Red Riding Hood a visit now – and not in a good way!

How’s come when Stephan Pastis does cut-aways like this it’s funny as all heck, but when I do it it’s sad? :)

Justin, because your grandma isn’t the black-belt karate expert or the extreme sports champion.

I agree with Surfstuff–this is heartbreaking cuz Grandma looks so frail and lonely in the final frame…and the cracked walls, frayed curtains and dying rose don’t exactly elevate the mood. Stephan couldn’t convey that kind of pathos, IMO. As usual, an amazing piece of sequential art!

Excuse me, I need to call my mother now, too…

Umm… in the Grimm fairy tale, didn’t the wolf EAT grandma? Seems to me that being temporarily hungry is better than being permanently food…

Well this is… horrifyingly depressing. Well done, but still. Oy.

Not exactly a happy ending, but better. Granny’s lonely, but uneaten, because Red made friends with the wolf. Or a bad silent movie, granny’s safe because the girl gave the wolf her goodies.

Puddleglum1066, sadly you’re never “permanently” food, it’s a temporary state, eventually the food becomes something else. Ashes to ashes, dust to dust, after we eat, pooping’s a must!

I like Tex Avery’s versions of Red (including Red Hot Riding Hood).

You can do what Steven can’t - you can create a full story, complete with a moral with just a few words and four squares of artwork. People can identify with what you have here. People are able to elaborate on it anyway that they want to. They can apply it to their own situation or perhaps one that they know of. It makes them stop and think of someone that they love and they feel the guilt of neglect, which is what RRH is doing to her grandmother. Her grandmother’s circumstances are not good according to your artwork. She is living in poverty and unable to manage much for herself as suggested by the walker and the torn curtains.

Listen to what people are saying here - they want to call Mom, they’re feeling guilty, etc. You can do something that very few comic artists can do. You’ve touched people’s hearts with this one. The last picture shows it all. This is art at its very best. This is one of your truly great works that I have seen in the past year and half or so that I’ve been reading this comic.

Justin, be very proud of this one. These comments show just how good you really are. I’m seriously hoping that someday you’ll be far more successful that Steven because you are far better than he will ever be.

How about Little Red Riding Babushka?

“But Bubbe, what a big nose you got!”

    “You should talk?”
