There is such a thing as “clean coal.” At the moment it is very expensive to produce, but it is something that still needs research.
If I were king of America, I would institute a 3-phase energy policy on par with the Manhattan Project or Apollo Project:
Phase 1: Continued exploration or exploitation to buy us time for the second two phases, mainly because we should have been doing those phases for the past 50 years.
Phase 2: Renewable fuels such as biodiesel – and NO, corn is not the ONLY thing that can make renewable fuels. Don’t take food off the table or land out of production for this purpose. Until we replace machinery that burns gas or oil, this will be a necessity.
Phase 3: Non-carbon based fuels such as nuclear, wind and solar. This is a lot more of a political problem than a technological one" nobody wants a wind farm in their backyard, and there is a high import tax on solar panels and energy companies have the right to disallow private use on their grids. As for nuclear: fusion power has been a decade away for the past half century.
